Ridge beams and wind posts for a Norwich house extension, fitted in two days

Another one in the books in Norwich. This week we installed the structural steel for a house extension: ridge beams and wind posts set inside the existing roof, with the original rafters and tiles left in place around the work.

Tight access, limited headroom

This wasn't a case of lifting steel into an open shell. The roof stayed on, so every piece had to be positioned within the existing structure. That meant tight access, limited headroom and a lot of coordination between the team in the loft and the team on the scaffold. Even so, the job was complete in two days.

Local crane support

A big thank you to Compact Crane Services, who are local to us in Rackheath. Their team were fantastic: precise lifts, patient operators, and genuinely helpful when the positions got awkward. They made a tough install a lot smoother.

A massive shout out to our own team too, for completing the job on time and safely.

UKCA-marked steel, fabricated and fitted by us

The steel for this extension was UKCA marked, then fabricated and fitted by J.A.S Welding Services Ltd. We fabricate structural steel to BS EN 1090 EXC2 in our Rackheath workshop. Where required, it comes with a declaration of conformity, and our in-house Responsible Welding Coordinator oversees quality.

Planning an extension or loft conversion?

Extensions and loft conversions often need steel: beams to open up walls, ridge beams to carry a new roof line, or posts to take wind loads. Beam sizes must be specified by a structural engineer. We take that specification and handle the fabrication and installation, or simply supply cut-to-length steel if you have your own team.

If you've got an extension or loft conversion coming up in Norwich or the surrounding area and need the steels designed, supplied and installed, have a look at our steel beams and RSJs page. Or call us on 01603 560808, or WhatsApp 07824 656634.
